Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements

ECON 40 and ECON 50 are prerequisites for most upper-division courses in economics. Any student planning graduate work is advised to take additional mathematics.

Core (18 units)

Lower-Division:

ECON 40 - Principles of Microeconomics Units: 3
ECON 50 - Principles of Macroeconomics Units: 3

Upper-Division:

ECON 100A - Intermediate Microeconomics Units: 3
ECON 100B - Intermediate Macroeconomics Units: 3
ECON 123 - Introduction to Econometrics Units: 3
ECON 192 - Senior Project Units: 3

Upper-Division Breadth and Application Course Selections (21 units)

Students must select one upper-division economics course from each of Categories I, II and III to be exposed to the breadth of fields of study in economics (9 units).

In addition, students must select four upper division economics courses from the remaining courses in Categories I, II, III, IV and V. (12 units).

Category I. Macroeconomics and International Economics Courses (3 units minimum)

ECON 103 - Introduction to Business Cycles Units: 3
ECON 114 - Economic Development of Poor Nations Units: 3
ECON 135 - Money and Banking Units: 3
ECON 178 - International Economics Units: 3
ECON 188T - Topics in Macro and International Economics Units: 1-3

Other Degree Requirements

In addition to the major program requirements, every student must also complete the University’s baccalaureate degree requirements such as:

American Government and Institutions (PLSI 2 ))
General Education Requirements (48 units)
Multicultural and International (MI)
Upper-division Writing
Sufficient Elective Units to Meet Required Total Units (varies); it is recommended that units in this area be utilized to complete a second major or minor.

Advising Notes

Residency requirement: complete at least 50% of the required Economics units in the Craig School of Business.
A grade of C or better must be earned for each course used to satisfy the requirements for the major.
CR/NC grading is not permitted in the economics major or minor, except for courses offered only under CR/NC grading.
ECON 123 has the following prerequisite: MATH 11 or MATH 101 or DS 73 or AGBS 71 or PSYCH 42 passed with C grade or better (in addition to ECON 40 and ECON 50 ).
