Program Description. The Single Subject Credential authorizes the credential holder to teach in the subject area specified on the credential in departmentalized classrooms commonly found at middle schools, high schools, and adult educational settings. The Kremen School of Education and Human Development offers the Preliminary Single Subject Credential.

A Preliminary Single Subject Credential authorizes the holder to teach a specified subject in a departmentalized classroom for a maximum period of five years. Requirements for completing the Professional (Clear) Single Subject Credential will be provided by the employing school district. The teacher credential program is overseen by the Single Subject Coordinator in the Kremen School of Education and Human Development.

Requirements for Admission

  1. Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or have completed 90 units towards an integrated degree program from Fresno State
  2. Have a GPA of 2.50 or higher overall
  3. Be subject matter competent (SMC) in the academic subject matter of the intended, selected credential
  4. Obtain a CTC Certificate of Clearance including a Live Scan
  5. Submit a current TB Risk Assessment
  6. Obtain a Mandated Reporter School Personnel Training Certificate
  7. Complete an admission interview and submit the admission interview form along with a personal narrative and a resume
  8. Obtain two current (within 1 year) letters of recommendation
  9. Verify and complete the Pre-Program Field Experience Hours

All interested applicants MUST submit a “complete” Fresno State university application and a teacher credential program application. Application instructions for both applications are available online at https://kremen.fresnostate.edu/teachingcredential/credapp.html. 

Note: Due to the specific credential academic subject matter area requirements required by the state and the state-mandated assessment expectations of the FAST for Single Subject Credential Program Candidates, credential option exchanges within the program are NOT allowed.

Program Completion Requirements (University and State Credentialing)
Successful completion of the program courses, dispositional assessments, and all performance assessment tasks associated with theFresno Assessment of Student Teachers (FAST).

Requirements for a Preliminary Single Subject Credential


Note: Teacher candidates must have earned a GPA of 3.0 with a C or better, or a CR (Credit), on all professional preparation courses to be recommended for the credential including the following:

  1. Successfully Completed the prerequisites and 34-unit program courses.
  2. Successfully demonstrated subject matter competence (SMC) Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in subject matter other than education.
  3. Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in subject matter other than education.
  4. Verify completion of CPR training.
  5. Complete a course in the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution or pass an examination in the subject given by a regionally accredited junior college, college, or university, or verify meeting the interstate agreement requirements.

Requirements for the Preliminary Credentials can change, and subject matter tests can be revised. For an update or other information, contact the Certification Programs Office in ED 100

Time Restrictions. Education courses required for a Preliminary Credential must be completed no more than five (5) years prior to credential application and/or preliminary credential recommendation.

Requirements for Admission to Initial Student Teaching (EHD 155A)


  1. Receive notification of initial admission to the Single Subject Credential program.
  2. Submit an EHD 155A School District Placement form by the specified deadline.
  3. Maintained a 3.0 GPA on all professional education courses. All courses (except those offered for CR/NC only) must be taken for a letter grade.
  4. Have completed or be enrolled concurrently in CI 161  and EHD 154A .

Requirements for Admission to Final Student Teaching (EHD 155B)


  1. Submit an EHD 155B Clearance application form by deadline.
  2. Demonstrated subject matter competence.
  3. Maintained a 3.0 GPA on professional education coursework. All courses (except those offered for CR/NC only) must be taken for a letter grade.
  4. Have successfully completed (or be enrolled concurrently) in LEE 157 , CI 161  or EHD 154B ; and successfully passed first phase courses including the Site Visitation Project (SVP).
  5. Available to for student teaching “full-time.”

Note: Students who receive a “No Credit” grade in any student teaching course are required to petition the Admission and Standards Committee for approval to retake the course. Students who receive a grade of “No Credit” for a second time will be dismissed from the Single Subject Credential Program. Student teachers whose placements are terminated after the date for refund of tuition are responsible for full tuition regardless of circumstances leading to termination.
