The Department of Linguistics  

The Department of Linguistics offers an M.A. in Linguistics with an option in General Linguistics and an M.A. in Linguistics with an option in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)/SLAT (Second Language Acquisition & Teaching). At California State University, Fresno, students may also get a Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on Computational Linguistics or Cognitive Science. Department faculty will assist students in planning such a program. For specific requirements, see Degree Requirements below; for general requirements see Division of Research and Graduate Studies.

The Master of Arts degree program in Linguistics assumes a baccalaureate degree major in an appropriate field and at least three upper-division courses in linguistics as prerequisites. Graduate students are required to complete at least 31 units of courses with a minimum of 22 units of graduate level courses, and to pass a comprehensive examination or complete a project or a thesis.

Classified Standing for Linguistics, MA (TESOL/SLAT option)

Students who do not already have a sufficient background in linguistics need to take upper-division linguistics courses to obtain classified standing in the department. These include  LING 139 , LING 141 , LING 143 , LING 148 , LING 165 , and LING 171I .

Graduate Level Writing Competence. Before advancement to candidacy, students must also satisfy the Graduate Writing Skills Requirement. This requirement is met by submission and approval of a sample of scholarly writing after admission to the Linguistics program, such as a term paper or thesis/project proposal. Master of Arts Degree Requirements


The graduate program consists of at least 31 units, 22 of which must be 200-level courses. Note the following requirements:

Culminating Experience (6 units)


All students select one of the following Culminating Experiences:

  • A. Project Option:

  • Units: 3
  • + either

  • Units: 3 OR 3 units of elective
  •  

  • B. Thesis Option:

  • Units: 3
  • AND

  • Units: 3
  •  

  • C. Comprehensive Exam Option

    Comprehensive Exam (0 units) + 6 units of Elective

    Elective unit total depends on the culminating experience chosen, and are in addition to the elective units found in the Option-Specific Requirements area of the major. Elective choices are to be chosen in consultation with the Graduate Program Coordinator. Courses can be chosen from within the Linguistics department as well as from other departments.

Total Units: 31
