The Certificate of Special Study in Linguistics - TESOL / SLAT (Second Language Acquisition and Teaching) is intended for local and international students who wish to specialize in teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Require Courses (9 units):

LING 141 - TESOL/SLAT (Second Language Acquisition & Teaching) Units: 3
LING 150 - Teacher Presence and Classroom Management Units: 3
LING 171I - Internships in Linguistics and TESOL/SLAT Units: 3

Select one course from (3 units):

LING 146 - Practical English Grammar for Language Teachers Units: 3
LING 155 - Computer Assisted Language Learning Units: 3

Total Units: 12

Advising Notes

Before beginning the certificate, students must complete one introductory Linguistics course: LING 10 , LING 11 , or LING 100 .
We strongly recommend that international students also take LING 110W prior to or concurrently with LING 141.
A grade of C or better is required for all certificate courses.
CR/NC grading is not permitted for courses included in the minor.
Open to all students.
