The Department of Chicano and Latin American Studies
Degree Requirements
Students are strongly encouraged to pursue a double major and can take the Chicano Studies either as a primary or secondary major. Chicano Studies majors and double majors are required to see a CLAS advisor during their first semester on campus.

In addition to the major program requirements, every student must also complete the University’s baccalaureate degree requirements such as: A full description of the University’s graduation requirements can be found in the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements . Total Units: 120*
*General Education, Additional University Graduation Requirements, and Upper-division Writing courses can be double counted with major requirements. These courses include CLAS 3 or CLAS 5 in Area 4B, and CLAS 114 or CLAS 115 in Area UD 4. See advisor for details. Advising Notes
- Contact the department chair or CLAS advisor for list of approved electives. A maximum of 3 units from CLAS 106 , CLAS 107 , CLAS 108 , CLAS 145 and CLAS 180T can be used to fulfill 3 units of electives, but students must secure proper and final approval from the department chair or CLAS advisor.
- Consult your advisor or the Schedule of Courses to determine what CLAS courses also meet General Education requirements.
- If the Chicano studies major is taken as a second major, CLAS courses taken to complete General Education Integration requirements also can be used to satisfy major requirements.
- Chicano studies majors are not permitted to take CLAS courses by CR/NC grading (unless the courses are only offered on that basis).
- General Education and elective units may be used toward a double major or minor (see double major or other departmental minor). Consult the appropriate department chair, program coordinator or faculty advisor for further information.
- Students who are planning to do graduate work in Chicano or Latin American studies are advised to study Spanish and/Portuguese.
