The Interdisciplinary Studies Degree provides an opportunity for students to engage in an individualized course of study leading to a degree when one’s academic and professional goals are not accommodated by standard degree majors. The Interdisciplinary Studies Degree consists of correlated studies in two or more fields and provides integrated instruction comparable in quality and depth to regular major programs. It is not intended as a means of bypassing normal graduation requirements.
The minimum requirement for the Interdisciplinary Studies Degree is an approved program of 45 units, at least 30 units of which must be upper division work including a capstone course. A maximum of six independent study units may be included in the Interdisciplinary Studies Degree Program. Any exception to this criteria must be approved in writing by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs designee.
Any students interested in an Interdisciplinary Studies Degree must meet with an academic counselor in the University Advising Center (UAC) to obtain an application. The following will be required for the application:
- Prepare a statement giving reasons for desiring an Interdisciplinary Studies Degree in terms of academic and professional goals and why these goals cannot be met through a standard major
- Develop a specific list of courses which would lead to the academic and professional goals
- Secure the signed approval from the University Advising Center, as well as from the Interdisciplinary Studies Degree Advisor and department chair in the areas from which the Interdisciplinary Studies Degree courses are drawn.
- The student must submit the foregoing material to the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs designee for final approval.
The University Advising Center (UAC) is in the Joyal Administration Building, Room 224. For more information, contact the UAC to make an appointment at (559) 278-1787
