Pre-Engineering, B.S.

The Pre-engineering Major prepares students for entry into the following majors: Civil Engineering (CE), Computer Engineering (Comp E), Electrical Engineering (EE), and Mechanical Engineering (ME). All first year students pursuing one of these engineering degrees are considered classified as Pre-Engineering until they fulfill the requirements of the Pre-Engineering program. To continue into one of these engineering majors and take 100-level courses in that program, Pre-Engineering students must complete the following requirements within two years of entering the Pre-Engineering program (see Advising Note 1)

A. Complete the Required Courses with a C or better (28 units)

Electrical or Computer Engineering Majors: ECE 1 - Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering Units: 1
Mechanical Enineering Majors: ME 2 - Computer Applications in Mech Engineering Lab Units: 1

Pre-Engineering Additional Requirements (11 units)

MATH 75 - Calculus I Units: 4
MATH 76 - Calculus II Units: 4
PHYS 4A - Mechanics and Wave Motion Units: 3

Other Courses Required (15 units)

GE Area A1 (3 units)
GE Area A2 (3 units)
BIOL 10 - Life Science Units: 3
PHIL 20 - Moral Questions Units: 3
PLSI 2 - American Government and Institutions Units: 3
OR

B. Have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.25

C. Submit a request to declare an engineering major

Advising Notes

Students with extenuating circumstances may petition for an extension of the two year time limit.
First year Pre-Engineering students will be enrolled in the required Pre-engineering courses. First year students who wish to take more than 14 units per semester may choose to self-enroll in additional courses. Advisors will work with Pre-engineering students who already have credit for one or more required courses to find appropriate alternative courses.
Students may request to substitute BIOL 1A (all majors) or BIOL 11 or BIOL 12 (except Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering).
Students may request to substitute CHEM 1A (Mechanical Engineering only).
Students may request to substitute PHIL 1 , PHIL 2 , or PHIL 10 (except Mechanical Engineering).
All Pre-engineering students must consult with their Academic Advisor each semester.
