Physics Major Requirements (52 units)
Upper-Division Electives (7 units)
Includes courses in physics and, with approval, in related fields. Students planning to pursue graduate study in physics are strongly encouraged to take courses from the following list (see advising note 2):

In addition to the major program requirements, every student must also complete the University’s baccalaureate degree requirements such as:
- American Government and Institutions (PLSI 2 )
- General Education Requirements (48 units)
- Multicultural and International (MI) - Physics majors are exempt from the M/I requirement
- Upper-division Writing
- Sufficient Elective Units to Meet Required Total Units (varies); it is recommended that units in this area be utilized to complete a second major or minor.

*General Education, MI, and Upper-division Writing courses can be double counted with major requirements. These courses include CHEM 1A & CHEM 1AL (Area B1), and MATH 75 (Area B4). Area See advisor for details.
Advising Notes
- CR/NC grading is not permitted in the physics major. Additional requirements, however, may be taken CR/NC (see Credit/No Credit Grading).
- PHYS 190 and PHYS 175T as well as courses outside the Department of Physics may be substituted for physics upper-division electives with prior approval of the department chair.
- All math and physics prerequisites for the physics major should be completed with a grade of C or better.
