Other Degree Requirements


In addition to the major program requirements, every student must also complete the University’s baccalaureate degree requirements such as:

  • American Government and Institutions (PLSI 2 )
  • General Education Requirements (48 units)
  • Multicultural and International (MI) - Enology majors are exempt from the MI requirement
  • Upper-division Writing
  • Sufficient Elective Units to Meet Required Total Units (varies); it is recommended that units in this area be utilized to complete a second major or minor.

*General Education, MI, and Upper-division Writing courses can be double counted with major requirements. These courses include CHEM 3A  (Area B1), BIOL 11  (Area B2), MATH 11  (Area B4), and AGBS 1  (Area D2). See advisor for details.

Advising Notes


  1. Students must take either CHEM 3A  or CHEM 1A , CHEM 1AL , CHEM 1B  and CHEM 1BL  to meet the prerequisite requirements for other chemistry courses required within the degree.
  2. During the Add/Drop period of their first semester, students are required to attend a department undergraduate orientation session. Alternatively, they are required to meet with the department chair. In either case, they will be assisted in selecting an appropriate faculty advisor.
  3. Students meet with their academic advisors prior to registration each fall semester.
  4. General Education courses designated as required by the department are prerequisites to many courses in the program of study.
  5. Upper-division G.E. courses (i.e., 100-level course) should not be attempted prior to the semester in which 60 units toward the degree have been completed.
  6. Students can take PLANT 110W  and pass with a grade of C or higher to meet the Upper-Division Writing Requirement.
  7. Viticulture students are encouraged to become certified crop scientists/specialists and pest control advisors (PCAs). Students should consult their faculty advisor for additional requirements for certification.
  8. All courses listed under the major and additional requirements require a grade of C or better. CR/NC grading is not permitted for courses included in the major, except for ENOL 194I .
