ASAM 68 - Asian Visual Culture: Techno Orientalism to Asian Futurism
This course will go over two emerging visual culture theories (Techno-Orientalism and Asian Futurism) on Asian American experiences as seen in Cinema, Literature and Art. Techno-Orientalism is a theory that describes the portrayal of Asia and Asians in futuristic and technological terms. It’s a phenomenon that appears in literature, film, and other media. Asian Futurism is a creative movement that imagines the future through the lens of Asian culture. It’s a relatively new concept that’s growing in popularity in literature, film, television, and street art. (i.e. Afro-Asian Futurism movement that uses Afro Asian martial arts performances to create solidarity between people of color.)
