LS 150 - Social Foundations of Education: School and Society




Prerequisite: GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C, 2 (Foundation) and Area 4 (formerly GE Area D)
This course introduces students to some philosophical, historical, and sociological foundations of education in the U.S. Students will critically examine a variety of purposes for engaging in education/learning; the predominant (and often competing) aims that shape schooling; and the numerous forms of power (i.e., classism, racism, sexism, ableism, heterosexism, linguicism, etc.) that function through institutional policies and practices.
